FNB NWU kicked off the game and within the first two minutes managed to get the first points on the board through a successful penalty by Schalk Hugo. After six minutes, FNB UJ were awarded their first penalty and Jeanluc Cilliers was able to equalise, leaving both teams tied 3-3.

Shortly after FNB NWU were awarded another penalty and Schalk Hugo managed to convert and FNB NWU were 6-3 ahead.


After 15 minutes of play FNB UJ managed to find the try line through Jaco Fourie, but after a TMO referral the try was disallowed due to a forward pass, leaving FNB NWU ahead 6-3. FNB UJ’s misfortune continued when Jeanluc Cilliers was unable to convert a penalty after 22 minutes.

 A minute later Dean Gordon dived in the opposite corner and after another TMO referral, the try was awarded. Schalk Hugo’s conversion was unsuccessful but FNB NWU were still 18-3 ahead with ten minutes to play in the first half. Going into half time the score remained 18-3 to FNB NWU.

The second half got off to a slow start, with two FNB UJ players being stretchered off in the first ten minutes. After 58 minutes FNB UJ got their first try of the game through their captain Jannes Snyman, however Jeanluc Cilliers missed the conversion, leaving FNB UJ chasing a 10-point deficit.

FNB NWU were the first team to use their Power Play, opting to send off Jan-Louis le Grange and Austic-Marc Davids, but were unable to get any further ahead during the three minutes.

FNB UJ used their Power Play next and sent off Tapiwe Mafura and Nkosana Mathaba. During the three minutes Adriaan Bester found the try line for FNB UJ and Jeanluc Cilliers successfully converted, leaving FNB UJ trailing by only 3 points.

 In the dying seconds of the game FNB UJ almost got the breakthrough they needed through a try, but a TMO referral confirmed that no try was scored. After a very intense 80 minutes, FNB NWU emerged victorious 18-15.
