The international multi-sport event for members of the Commonwealth of Nations is currently graced by athletes of all 72 Commonwealth Games Association and amongst them is South Africa. Team South Africa is currently sitting on position 6 with a total of 20 medals.

Grit Sports takes a look at the SPAR Proteas representing South Africa in Netball at the Commonwealth games.

Game 1 VS Jamaica

The SPAR Proteas kick started their commonwealth game 1 fixture against Jamaica. This was their seventeenth meet up with South Africa. It wasn’t a good start for the ladies as they succumbed to a 68-49 defeat against The Sunshine girls. The Sunshine girls have a great record against South Africa, having had won 13 out of their 16 previous encounters.

Score breakdown

Q1 Jamaica 18-7 South Africa

Q2 Jamaica 37-19 South Africa

Q3 Jamaica 54-31 South Africa

Q4 Jamaica 68-49 South Africa

Game 2 VS Barbados

This was the 11th meeting between South Africa and Barbados. The Proteas looked to redeem themselves after their opening game where they lost to Jamaica. South Africa have never lost a match against Barbados and this streak continued as they hammered Barbados 91-36.

Changes were made for this encounter by South Africa’s head coach Dorette Badenhorst and were very crucial for the proteas’ first win in the Commonwealth games. The game was very physical that Barbados were to be closed to not scoring more than ten goals per quarter. A stellar performance was displayed by the SPAR Proteas securing their first win at the Commonwealth games. This was also the most goals South Africa scored against Barbados as they scored a minimum of 20 points in all four quarters. Clinical visibility and a sense of urgency was displayed by South Africa.

Score breakdown

Q1 South Africa 23-9 Barbados

Q2 South Africa 43-18 Barbados

Q3 South Africa 66-27 Barbados

Q4 South Africa 91-36 Barbados

Game 3 VS Australia

It is never a great encounter against the world’s number 1 as South Africa lost 74-49 against Australia. This was their 42nd meeting and Australia are yet to lose a match against South Africa. Aussie Diamonds outshined the SPAR Proteas as they dominated each quarter of the match.

Score breakdown

Q3 Australia 56-37 South Africa

Q4 Australia 40-24 South Africa

Game 4 VS Wales

South Africa maintained their unbeaten run against Wales as they claimed yet another win, this time in the Commonwealth Games. Both teams played a two test match series as preparations for the Commonwealth games and Team SA won the series. With South Africa still yet to lose against Wales, it was expected of them to dominate in this game and redeem themselves from their loss against Australia. Wales also looked to redeem themselves following their loss against Jamaica.

The first quarter finished on an even 12-12 and caused a high anticipation as the result afterwards could go both ways. However the SPAR Proteas continued to maintain their winning streak as they dominated Q2,3 and 4 with 10 and more points.

Score breakdown

Q2 South Africa 31-21 Wales
