Johannesburg – Highlands Park wrapped up their debut season by winning the Easterns Local Football Association (ELFA) Women’s Cup.
What started off as fun and recreational exercise of forming a women’s team, Highlands Park went on to exceed their own expectations by winning the ELFA Women’s Cup and finishing 3rd in the ELFA Women’s League.
Highlands Park captain Liat Ilouze, said: “Our team was mostly about fun and laughter. The highlight of our season is finishing in the top 3 in the league and winning the cup when initially we didn’t think we could.”
The Lions of the North captain further added, “The expectation for next season is for everyone to come back and do better, win the league as well as the cup again.”
Highlands Park star striker Kayla Vieira, who joined the team from Lusa Africa FC, also expressed her delight of playing for Highlands Park.
“When I got to Highlands Park, the team was very welcoming and very inviting. I really enjoyed the team. They are a very funny bunch of girls. I really enjoyed everyone’s company and playing with everyone.
Coach Jerry Mapatu, who guided the team in their impressive debut season, is already looking forward towards an even better 2nd season.
“For the coming season we want to win the league. Everyone now is aware of Highlands Park, they know that we are the team that won the cup so they (opponents) will come hard at us. But when we go back to our pre-season we are going to work and focus on winning the league.
