At the age of 23, Aiden Markram is doing what most Protea opening batsmen have failed at achieving at Test level.

Since Greame Smith retired from International cricket, he left a void that South Africa could not fill, Dean Elgar was left on his own to pick up the pieces. Elgar has partnered up with at least four batsmen in four years since Smith ‘s departure, Alviro Pieterson, Stiaan van Zyl, Heino Kuhn and Stephen Cook.

Aiden Markram has been part of the Proteas squad since last year when the South Africa toured England but he never got a chance to play. He made his debut September 2017 against Bangladesh.

In six months, Markram has scored 4 hundreds, one against Bangladesh, one against Zimbabwe and two against Australia, with his highest Test score 152 against Australia at the Wanderers Cricket Ground.
