FNB Maties went into the clash on Monday evening hoping to make it four from four wins in Varsity Cup 2018 – and that they did. FNB CUT were looking to build on their impressive victory over FNB Madibaz last week and certainly, FNB CUT made the home team work for their victory. The opening five minutes belonged to FNB CUT and rightfully so they were first on the board through a well worked try which found the hands of fullback Dimitrio Tieties.

For FNB Maties, it was a frustrating opening period with passes not sticking and a mounting penalty count. Inside 12 minutes the visiting FNB CUT team found themselves 12-0 up through winger Masego Toolo. FNB Maties had to mount a comeback of sorts and indeed they were next to score. Lock Brandon Valentyn powered through the FNB CUT defensive line and found Duncan Saal in support who scored under the posts and FNB Maties were immediately back in the game 12-9 going into the first strategy break.

The somewhat new-look FNB Maties team struggled for coherence and accuracy – at least in the first half. Indeed, had they been more clinical, they could have scored three more tries in the opening 30 minutes. Eventually FNB Maties would lead for the first time in the game just after the half hour mark through Marno Redelinghuys. That lead, FNB Maties would not relinquish.

Indeed, by halftime, FNB Maties had put their horror show behind them and were well and truly on course for their fourth victory of the campaign. Edwill van der Merwe scored a try on the stroke of halftime while inside centre Chris Smit scored within the first minute of the second half to all but seal the victory for FNB Maties. What made matters worse for FNB CUT was that the Maroon Machine were hurting them with a series of seven-pointers from which, FNB CUT would have no reply.

Eighth-man Redelinghuys rounded off his hat-trick for FNB Maties in the 67th minute and in so doing sealed his second FNB Player that Rocks award in as many games. Tries from Brendon Nell and Stephan Streicher completed the scoring rout for FNB Maties.
