It was a dissappointing week for South African sports. We take a look at some of the sports highlights from the past week.



Roger Federer played in his 30th Grand Slam final on Sunday against Marin Cilic. Federer went on to win the match 6-2 6-7 6-3 3-6 6-1 and claimed his 20th Grand Slam and made it his sixth Australian Open title win.


South Africa and India battled it out at the Wanderers Cricket Ground in the third and last test of the Freedom Series. India defeated South Africa by 63 runs, Proteas won the Series 2-1.

England beat Australia by 12 runs in the fifth One Day International match played in Perth. England won the Series 4-1


Liverpool crashed out of the FA Cup losing to West Bromwich Albion. Chelsea beat Newcastle 3 – 0, Manchester City beat Cardiff City 2 – 0, Manchester United beat Yeoville 4 – 0.


Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns played to a 0 – 0 draw at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.

Orlando Pirates beat Platinum Stars 2 – 0. Bidvest Wits beat Supersport United 4 – 1 and Cape Town City drew 1 – 1 with Bloemfontein Celtic.


Barcelona beat Alaves 2 – 1
Real Madrid beat Valencia 4 – 1


Blitzboks top the HSBC World Series standings despite losing the final against Australia at the Sydney Sevens tournament on Sunday. Blitzboks went down 29 – 0 in the final.


The SPAR SANZEA Netball Quad Series ended on a disappointing note for the SPAR Proteas, who went down 52-47 to the England Roses at the Ellis Park Indoor Arena on Sunday.

Australia were the overall winners of the Quad Series Championship
