Pretoria – Highlands Park Under-17 win epic battle in Pretoria against Mamelodi Sundowns Under-17 in the SAFA Gauteng Development League encounter last Friday afternoon.

After a very cagey first half of football from both sides, Highlands Park Under-17 striker Siyanda Magwaza opened the scoring early in the second half with an audacious attempt from a tight angle.


Mamelodi Sundowns Under-17 had a few opportunities of their own in the second half which they failed convert.

Highlands Park FC Under-17 gangly striker Antino Smith increased his teams lead when he rounded the goal keeper to give his team a two goal lead mid-way through the second half.

Heading towards the closing stages of the match, Highlands Park FC Under-17 Coach Jerry Mapatu introduced Sizwe Mkhise ho came off the bench to complete the scoring with a calm finish to secure his team a 3-0 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns Under-17.

Coach Jerry Maputo was understandably thrilled with his team’s effort which he attributed down to good defence as a base for the team to push forward.

“As long as you don’t concede a goal, you not going to lose the game. Everything starts from the defence.” Maputo added, “We had a strategy, we also looked at their height and we hit them on the counter which worked for us.”

The Highlands Park FC Under-17 coach also commended SAFA Gauteng on the Gauteng Development League initiative.

“I think it’s a good initiative and a big platform for youngsters to express themselves. This is the right place where the boys can start learning how to be professional on the field of play. I really applaud SAFA Gauteng on this initiative.”
