Womens seeds Serena Williams, Karolina Pliskova and Jo Konta breezed through their opening round matches in hot temperatures on day of the Australian Open.
Williams, chasing an Open-era record 23rd grand slam trophy, described her win against Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic as one of her toughest first round matches.
Novak Djokovic, who is looking for an unprecedented seventh Australian Open crown, will also have his work cut out for him against Spain’s Fernando Verdasco, who shocked Rafael Nadal in round one last year.
Third seed Milos Raonic, threatening for his first Grand Slam title, made a positive start by downing Dustin Brown before 14-time major-winner Nadal, at the other end of his career, got his campaign underway.
