Orlando Pirates chairman Dr Irvin Khoza has confirmed that they are in talks with former Bafana Bafana captain Steven Pienaar.
The creative midfielder is currently a free-agent after parting ways with English Premier League outfit Everton FC at the end of the recent 2015/16 season.
Bucs are targeting Pienaar as a another high profile signing following the signing of legendary Bafana striker Benni McCarthy from West Ham United as a free agent in 2011.
“We have been talking to [Pienaar] to see if he’s available to play for us. If he is we will pursue him,” Khoza said in The Sowetan .
“Benni did well when he was with us, and he helped us a lot,” the Bucs club boss added.
Meanwhile, former Ajax Cape Town star Pienaar has already revealed that he is keen to play in the Soweto derby which features Pirates and their main rivals Kaizer Chiefs.
”The idea of playing in [the Soweto Derby] game, you know, really appeals to me,” he told TMG Digital .
”It is, after all, the biggest game in South Africa. I have spoken to a lot of [Chiefs and Pirates] players and they go on about this game.
“And with me being an Orlando Pirates fan, it is obviously a game that interests me.
”My friends always tell me when they’ve played in the game that, wow … just the atmosphere in the stadium alone is something else. Everyone wants to be part of something like that.”
