Third-placed Bidvest Wits and Ajax Cape Town, runners-up to Sun-downs in the Nedbank Cup in May, will play in the Confed Cup.

The participation of three of the leading contenders for the PSL title this season will throw up an interesting curve ball in this year’s championship race as the extra matches and long travel sap energy in an already hectic programme in the second half of the season.

CAF has no fixed date for releasing the draws for its two club competitions, but it is usually done around the middle of December . The draw is also done behind closed doors , and is rather manufactured to take into account geographical factors.

It is therefore highly likely that all four SA sides will be drawn against southern African opposition in the preliminary round, as has been the case for a number of years.

This year Sundowns played Seychelles side St Michel United in their Champions League opener, while Chiefs played against Botswana outfit Township Rollers.

Wits took on Swaziland club Royal Leopards in the preliminary round of the Confederation Cup and were famously beaten on penalties as they fielded a young side. Pirates had a bye into the first round.

The teams will also know their path to the pool stages of the Champions League at least, as CAF makes the draw for all the knockout rounds in the first phase of the competition. The Champions League gets under way on the weekend of February 12-14
