Springbok captain Jean De Villiers is out of the Rugby World Cup 2015 after suffering an injury against Samoa. Plenty South African supporters will have been saddened by the news however will be aware that the Captain should not have been playing in the first place when one considers his form going into the world cup and considering the form of his counterparts in the position.
De Villiers would have made for a solid substitute for the latter stages of the world but once again Meyer got it wrong risking him against Samoa, in a game the Springboks were by in large expected to win.
After the springboks loss to Japan, the media and many in social networks were calling for Jean be dropped, as it was evidently clear that he was not the De Villiers of old. Having spent the entire season nursing an injury.
This will present an opportunity for the likes of Jesse Kriel who had been played out of position to accommodate Jean and was also the best centre for the Springboks during the Rugby Championship.
It is very disappointing that the likes of Mapoe were left behind for the gamble on De Villiers of which it is now clear that it has not paid off.
