The City 2 City marathon organization was an absolute shambles according to one of the runners who asked to remain anonymous and took part and completed the race. It is alleged that on route in the 50 kilometer race there was no water for up three consecutive stations and only Coke Cola was available. The runners also had to settle for warm water as there was no ice in most of the stations.
Our source having competed and completed the two oceans marathon questioned governments lack of involvement in the sport pointing out DAs hands on approach when it came to Western Cape race. “Last years race had to be cancelled because of lack of sponsorship, meanwhile come Easter Weekend our airports are full of international runners who have come to participate in the Two Oceans Marathon, I do not think I will ever participate in this race again.”
However it is not all doom and gloom for the race as our source pointed out “look the race takes place at the center of the economic hub of the country, and the scenery is just spectacular.”
However it is very disappointing to get such feedback especially considering the preparation and put before such races. We hope that in future a bit more attention is given to detail. We also hope that Fikile Mbalula can focus his attention on running as a sport, in the Gauteng region.
The next big ultra marathon will be the Soweto Marathon which will take place in November.
