Former UEFA president Michel Platini has been arrested as part of an investigation into alleged corruption relating to the decision to award Qatar the 2022 World Cup

Michel Platini has been arrested over the awarding of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar in December 2010. The 63-year-old was elected as UEFA president in 2007 until he was banned by the FIFA Ethics Committee for a series of breaches in 2015.

It is understood that the French legend was taken to the premises of the Anti-Corruption Office of the Judicial Police (OCLCIFF). When Qatar was named as the hosts of the World Cup in 2022, there have been a number of controversies giving the hosting rights to the Middle East nation. Allegations of corruption and bribery within FIFA top-ranked officials have raised questions over the legitimacy of the bid from Qatar.
