FNB Shimlas flyhalf Lubabalo Dobela scored 24 points in the home side’s 69-33 victory over FNB CUT in the Bloemfontein derby.

FNB Shimlas started off strongly with good tactical kicking and forced FNB CUT onto the back foot in their own half. FNB Shimlas turned the ball over in the FNB CUT half to give themselves an excellent attacking opportunity, where Dobela went over for a five-pointer in the fourth minute, he then converted his own try to open the score.

FNB Shimlas kept their momentum with constructive play, shifting the ball wide with Dobela sending winger Francois Agenbag over with a seven-pointer. FNB Shimlas did not waste time and scored their third try from the kick off in the 14th minute, flanker Janco Cloete scored and flyhalf Dobela converted the try to put FNB Shimlas 21-0 in the lead.

FNB CUT came out of the strategy break firing and started a drive from a penalty lineout, with prop Stefan Van Schalkwyk going over for a five-pointer converted by full-back Dimitrio Tieties to put FNB CUT on the scoreboard 21-7 in the 22nd minute.

FNB CUT managed to pin FNB Shimlas in their own quarter with penalties and continued pressure. FNB Shimlas Henk Pretorius lock was sent off with a yellow card in 29th minute for foul play at the break down.

FNB CUT took the opportunity and earned a penalty try with an excellent scrum, taking the score to 21-14 to the hosts in the 30th minute. 

FNB CUT was not done yet though, after good constructive play putting up several phases sent full-back Tieties over in the corner for a five pointer, Dimitrio converted his own try to surprisingly draw the score 21 all with two minutes play left in the first half. FNB Shimlas, however had the last say with a try on half time, winger Athi Halom went over and Dobela converted to take the lead, making it 28-21.

FNB CUT took their Power Play after half time sending off both FNB Shimlas’ centres with 13 players managing turn the ball over and from broken play, Dobela displayed great individual play and scored a five pointer, his second try, that he converted the try to stretch the score to 35-21. In the 50th minute, FNB Shimlas opted for the Power Play and sent off the outside centre Ruan Wasserman and winger Duncan Van Vuuren.

FNB Shimlas managed to score their sixth try in the 53rd minute with constructive running rugby, the try was converted by Dobela, one again, taking the score to 44-21. The flood gates opened at Shimla Park where FNB Shimlas scored from the kick off, with Captain Benji Jansen Van Vuuren going over, Dobela converted, making the score to 53-21.

FNB CUT weren’t done yet and scored a try from a strong scrum, where prop Stefan Van Schalkwyk went over for his second try, the conversion was unsuccessful taking score to 53-26. FNB Shimlas answered with a seven pointer, replacement flanker Mihlali Peter scoring, Dobela converted to stretch the score to 62-26.

FNB CUT didn’t give up and scored a consolation try, converted by fullback Tieties making the final score 69-33. FNB Shimlas did well to blow FNB CUT away bur wasn’t enough to claim a FNB Varsity Cup semi-final spot.
