Record breaking Olympic gold medallist Wayde van Niekerk will be out for six months after slipping and tearing his ligaments in a Tag Rugby Celebrity Match at Newlands.

The event was one of many pre-match activities taking place at Newlands before South Africa took on New Zealand in the Rugby Championship match. Things turned out for the worst for the World Record holder as news came in yesterday that he required knee surgery in the U.S and subsequently he will be out for six months.

He will miss the SA Champs in March and Commonwealth Games in April, held in Australia.
