83rd ranked Sloane Stephens met with fellow American Madison Keys in the women’s US Open Final at Flushing Meadows on Saturday. Stephens who has been sidelined for eleven months by a left foot injury, returned to tennis in July this year.
The 24 year old proved to be too strong for her American counterpart, beating her 6-3 6-0. Madison Keys made 17 unforced errors in the first set to just two from Stephens. In the second set, Stephens was unstoppable as Keys could not hold serve, in a match that lasted only 61 minutes.
With the 15th win in her 17 matches, Sloane Stephens became only the fifth unseeded player to win a women’s Grand Slam title.
