After Mamelodi Sundowns convincing victory over Zamalek all credit must go to Pitso Mosimane who now stands alone on the foot of the highest pinnacle as the most decorated South African born coach in the history of South African football.
It was only a few weeks ago when Pitso’s team were trumped by a resurgent Wits University in the MTN 8 final which sent panic waves across South Africa with many concerned that we might have seen the best of Sundowns. This was mainly due to the heavy load of fixtures they had and of course to throw a spanner in the works, an international break in the middle of the fixtures. There was surely no way Sundowns would regain form to beat Zamalek in the pending CAF final?
Despite all the challenges Pitso managed to get his charges to step up and deliver when it mattered most. To put it simply Sundowns were on fire on the leg of the CAF final beating Zamalek resoundingly and making them favourites to win.
However Pitso team still needed to make a trip to one of the most hostile of football environments world over. It would have been easy for the Sundowns to get carried away and relax only to slip at the final hurdle.
Pitso once again showed he was up for the challenge and despite all attempts from Zamalek to destabilise Sundowns team, he kept them concentrated on the task at hand. Sundowns players game management was supreme as they kept level headed and focussed on the task at hand coming out victors on goal difference over the two legs.
Pitso Mosimane has to go down as South Africa greatest coach to descend from these shores. The question now is do we back Shakes Mashaba to be a success as Pitso has or do replace him with Pitso the great.
