Another day, another city, another win as world 400-metre champion Wayde van Niekerk continued his undefeated march to the Rio Olympics later this year.
On this occasion it was at the event featuring one of his sponsors, the adidas Boston Games on Friday evening.
Not long after arriving in the United States after an incredibly educational time spent with Olympic sprint legend Usain Bolt and the top Jamaican sprinters and coaches, Van Niekerk picked up where he’d left off… bossing his opposition.
Running his signature event, the one-lapper, he clocked 44.28sec for the most comfortable of victories over Caribbean athlete Machel Cedonio of Trinidad and Tobago (44.87) and America’s David Verburg rounded off the podium in 44.98.
Van Niekerk went into Boston boasting a season’s bests of 44.11 for the 400 and was clearly in hot form having run another personal best 31.03 for 300m during his Jamaican jaunt, the third fastest ever run on the globe.
Next assignment for South Africa’s world champion is the African Championships in Durban next week.
Bring it on…
