Nike has cut ties with tennis star Maria Sharapova following the announcement she failed a drugs test at the Australian Open earlier this year.
CNBC tweeted a screenshot of a statement released by Nike saying they’re “saddened and surprised” by Sharapova’s revelation.
“We have decided to suspend our relationship with Maria while the investigation continues. We will continue to monitor the situation,” the reported statement reads.
Sharapova is the highest-paid sportswoman in the world in thanks to a huge eight-year deal worth NZ$103 million endorsement deal with the sporting brand giant.
She is the seventh athlete in a month to test positive for meldonium, which is used to treat diabetes and low magnesium, and was only banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) as of January 1.
