sa vs aus 500 x 500It was a tightly contested affair at Suncorp in Brisbane as the Springboks, ranked 2nd by the International Rugby Board (IRB), went down to a last minute try by the Wallabies, ranked 6th in the rankings.

The away team had been ahead on points when Australia’s outside centre Tevita Kuridrani rolled over the line scoring his fifth and winning try to take the home team ahead 22-20, with Matt Giteau standing by to slot home the conversion.

The television referee had to be called into action to make a decision on whether this was a legitimate try or it wasn’t. The South African rugby supporters would not have been surprised at the decision to award the try having endured a torrid time in Super Rugby with some questionable decisions having been made.

The South African Rugby technical team which is headed by former Blue Bulls coach Heyneke Meyer, find themselves with more questions than they do answers after the defeat. This after the Bokke seemed to be on course for what some would have considered a well calculated victory over the Wallabies.

Meanwhile in New Zealand, the All Blacks who are the current World Rugby Champions, whom in preparation of defending the title they had won in 2011, swept away Argentina 39 to 18. The home team had not lost a home match in Christchurch since 1998 and as such there were no surprises when they ran rampant over an Argentinian team still trying to find its feet in championship rugby after having been included in the last couple of years in the competition.
